How have you navigated a career in STEM as a woman/underrepresented minority?
Admittedly, I felt uncertain about a career in STEM for many years. My hesitation and self-doubts were based on two factors. First, I had not met many African American women who were in STEM careers, so I questioned my ability to become a toxicologist. Second, I had allowed other peoples’ doubts about my career choices become my own. However, I realized I had to do want would make me happy. I was able to recognize these doubts and overcome them with the support of my family and friends.
What advice do you have for women/underrepresented groups pursuing an education/career in STEM?
I think it is very important to have a mentor and start having informational interviews. Speaking to individuals that are currently in your career of interest helps provide realistic expectations and other important information.
What do you enjoy most about your career/current role?
I enjoy evaluating real-world exposure scenarios. Being able to pursue a thesis project that aims to protect humans and animals has been very rewarding.
What does diversity, inclusivity, and equity look like to you in your job sector? How do you incorporate DEI in your position?
To me DEI, is the incorporation of diverse communities of people with innovative ideas aimed at promoting equity in STEM. I created and implemented a yearly climate survey for my graduate program. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate our programs DEI efforts and students’ well-being. This allows for everyone in our community to provide ideas and solutions that will maintain an equitable and welcoming learning environment.
What is your favorite way to unwind?
I enjoy walking or running at the Lakeshore Nature Preserve and relaxing at Memorial Union Terrace.
