Undergraduate students with limited backgrounds are often unfamiliar with opportunities around campus for getting involved in research. In the statistics department, we have been trying to promote these sorts of research opportunities through our annual Faculty Quick Talks, where 7-10 faculty members from around campus give short presentations on data science research opportunities for undergraduate students. Also, I have been serving on the statistics department’s Climate and Diversity committee, and we been working to promote geographic and economic diversity through a new initiative to provide PhD application fee waivers. Paying for (often many) PhD application fees can be a significant roadblock for students seeking to pursue graduate degrees, so we hope to provide some mitigation.

We deal with modern big data which is highly interconnected through graphical structures: phylogenetic networks to study evolution, interaction networks to study microbial communities in soil and plants, neural networks to predict phenotypes from genotypes. Our work produces a collection of new statistical methods with solid theoretical guarantees and efficient computational implementations that are adaptable to analyze the complex characteristics of modern big biological data

Feeling discounted from your peers? GWIS is here to offer a fun social networking event! This event will be different than your average virtual happy hour or game night!

At this event we will begin in a large group, then a question will be asked, such as “are you a cat, dog or lizard person?” or “are you interested in Industry, Academia, Government or Unknown?”. Based on what you would answer, you can join the corresponding breakout room to meet and connect with like-minded people! You will hang out in this room for 5-15 minutes to chat and connect. Then we’ll regroup and do it again with new questions. The questions will be a mix of professional/work-related and personal/hobby related. It is our version of the game connections! If you are interested please join us Wednesday, March 17th from 5-6 pm to meet some fun new people!

Then had to analyze bombs during the Iraq War. She then transitioned into the Arms Control Bureau as a physical scientist- moved to the financial sanctions world and did terrorist sanctions (Foreign Affairs Specialist, Counter-terrorism office). Now she is the Managing director for nuclear policy at the outrider foundation (nonprofit here in Madison).
